Hitting the trail…

The past two weekends I’ve been able to walk one of our local trails with the kids. It’s made me feel like such a good mom to have some exercise and time with them away from the TV and electronics. Exploring nature is almost a lost art now it seems. I can remember spending many a day outdoors playing with my friends when I was growing up but we slowly have moved to a whole generation of teens who don’t get to experience nature or even want to be outside. My 19 year old daughter has been one of them, but through trying many things with me including the gym and my Zumba class we just weren’t finding her niche in getting some exercise and having fun with it. Then one day recently we were taking the dog for a walk and found a trail leading into the woods in our neighborhood. We decided to go back later that day and explore and had great fun just seeing what it might lead to. We haven’t found the end of the neighborhood trail yet, but decided to take some longer hikes on the Daphne Village Pointe Park trail. It’s about a mile and a half from the parking lot to the pier and back which is a nice walk especially this time of year! There are smaller trails that branch off made by the local boy scout chapters years ago and an old oak tree where Andrew Jackson gave a speech. Even a graveyard of a founding family of the Eastern Shore area that’s pretty interesting. We definitely will spend more time there before the weather gets too cold. Now we are looking into other trails in the area to explore and I’m just beyond excited to have found “the thing” that gets my daughter excited about exercising. So, you may not like the gym or a Zumba class but don’t give up looking for the thing that makes you happy. It might very well be walking a trail in the middle of nature that sets you on your path to being more healthy!
